America’s oldest game just might be the one with the brightest future. In the next decade, insiders predict massive lacrosse growth in the youth, collegiate and professional ranks.
More and More Students are Picking Up a Stick
Across the country, more young students are picking up a stick than ever before. For the first time ever, there are more than 450,000 youth players in America right now. At all age levels, the total number of lacrosse participants on organized teams has risen above 800,000, according to US Lacrosse.
It seems like just about every day another kid discovers the magic of lacrosse after witnessing high-flying professionals like the New York Lizards in action.
Lacrosse Growth Explodes at the College Level
Over the past few decades, the fastest game on two feet has grown by leaps and bounds in the college ranks, too. In the 2010s, 15 Division I schools added men’s lacrosse programs.
The sport has also spread from its traditional hotbeds of Long Island and Maryland to cities in states as far away as Denver and California. In fact, the University of Denver was the Division I Men’s NCAA Champion just a few years ago.
As participation in the youth game increases, you are likely to see more schools in unexpected places launch lacrosse programs in the coming years.
Professional Lacrosse Takes Center Stage
During this time of unprecedented lacrosse growth, the sport has successfully made the leap into professional stadiums around the country.
Since 2001, Major League Lacrosse has showcased the best the game has to offer. From filthy dodges to dazzling stick tricks to unbelievable behind-the-back goals, the New York Lizards and other pro squads have elevated lacrosse to a new level.
As we enter the 2020s, you can expect to see more of these types of jaw-dropping plays happening on a professional lacrosse field near you.
Playing Lacrosse is Always a Smart Move
The continued growth of the game of lacrosse means that more young people are gaining the significant benefits of sports participation, like an opportunity to work out, socialize and learn good sportsmanship.
For all these reasons and more, picking up a stick or watching a professional lacrosse game is an excellent resolution for the New Year.
